Useful information about taking part in the Bergwaldprojekt
Work Assignment | A typical Bergwaldprojekt work assignment is not a vacation job for late risers. The week begins on Sunday afternoon with an introduction and a group presentation. From Monday to Friday, the day starts at 6:30 AM with a hearty breakfast, followed by forest work in groups of 6 to 20 volunteers. The program also includes a half-day forestry excursion. In addition to working in the forest, volunteers also help with cooking and other household tasks. At the end of the week, tools are maintained, and the accommodation is cleaned before departure on Saturday morning.
Work | The tasks in the mountain forest include, among other things, maintenance work in protective forests and cultural landscapes, building fences, walking paths, or planting trees. The activities are guided by experienced project leaders and trained group leaders, and are specifically tailored to the forestry needs of the region.
Accommodation | Most accommodations are simple, often remote alpine and forestry huts without electricity and hot water. In some cases, overnight stays in tents are required. More comfortable accommodations offer shared rooms with four to twenty beds and are generally equipped with electricity and showers.
Catering | Our simple cuisine focuses on regional, seasonal, and organic ingredients, with minimal meat. For lunch, we usually serve a soup or a cold meal in the forest.
Equipment | The basic equipment includes clothing suited for mountain weather, with a replacement for rainy days. Sturdy and high mountain boots with good tread (two pairs recommended), a good rain protection, sleeping bag, flashlight, and thermos bottle.
Requirements | Participation is generally open to everyone. Forestry knowledge is not required, but good physical fitness and surefootedness are essential.
Costs | Participation in the Bergwald project is generally free of charge. Travel to and from the site, as well as insurance, are the responsibility of the volunteers. Schools, families, and companies contribute with a fee for organizational costs.
